Alloy 309/309S (UNS/S30908) austenitic stainless steel is a commonly used alloy for high temperature applications. Its high chromium-nickel content provides comparable corrosion resistance, excellent oxidation resistance, and greater partial room temperature strength than that of common austenitic Alloy 304.
309S (UNS) is a low-carbon alloy. It is used for manufacturing convenience. 309H (UNS) is a high carbon modification used to enhance creep resistance. In most cases, the plate particle size and carbon content can meet the requirements of 309S and 309H. Alloy 309 can be easily welded and machined through standard shop fabrication practices.
